The Unspoken Cost of Faith: What (NETFLIX) Death of the Pastor’s Wife Exposes About Church Culture

The Netflix docuseries is titled Death of the Pastor’s Wife.
NETFLIX  DOCUSERIES "DEATH OF THE PASTOR'S WIFE

Recently, I watched the three-part Netflix docuseries Death of the Pastor’s Wife. While I am not a film critic, this series struck a deeply personal chord. Having grown up in the church and navigated a painful marriage and divorce myself, the dynamics on display were chillingly familiar. Though no one in my former congregation committed suicide, I know women who grew sick and withered away from severe heartbreak.

The docuseries details the life and death of 30-year-old Mica Miller. Raised in the church, Mica was in her teens when she met John-Paul "JP" Miller, a powerful local pastor who was married with children and 14 years her senior. After their extramarital affair led to the breakdown of both of their first marriages, JP and Mica eventually married. On April 27, 2024, just two days after serving JP with divorce papers, Mica died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. While official authorities ruled her death a suicide, her family and loved ones argue—and federal cyberstalking charges against JP reflect—that severe emotional, spiritual, and systemic abuse drove her to the edge.

"My goal in sharing this is not to render a legal verdict on Pastor JP. Rather, I want to highlight the structural failures of the local church: its failure to protect vulnerable women, its refusal to address mental health as a clinical reality rather than a spiritual shortcoming, its failure to hold men accountable, and its misuse of Scripture as a tool for control."

According to JP and Mica, they framed their union as a story of redemption—claiming God would get the glory out of their past mistakes. But this narrative ignores a stark power dynamic: Mica was a young woman taken advantage of by an older spiritual leader in a position of trust. True grace would have looked like repentance and restoration within their original marriages, not a pastor discarding his family to take a younger bride. Sadly, this scenario plays out in congregations everywhere: a husband strays, the marriage shatters, and the cheating leader is restored—often starting a new family with a younger woman while the ex-wife is left behind to gather the broken pieces and raise children alone. What if churches publicly condemned this pattern instead of normalizing it? Could publicly holding these men accountable save future wives and families from immense suffering?

In his pulpits, JP regularly preached that wives must never withhold sex from their husbands, framing a woman's submission as the primary tool to keep a man from giving in to temptation. But where is the spiritual discipline required of a Christian man to honor his own vows? The series revealed that Mica even resorted to taking testosterone-boosting steroids to keep up with her husband’s sexual demands—yet the infidelity continued.

"Having once tried to overextend myself to satisfy an ex-spouse's demands out of fear, I recognized that pain immediately. Intimacy is meant to spring from mutual love and honor, not performative pressure to keep a husband from straying. Women in church routinely hear sermons on submitting to their husbands, but rarely hear equal weight given to the command for husbands to love their wives selflessly, as Christ loved the church."

Mica served as a praise and worship leader, often weeping on stage. Watching her confirmed a heartbreaking truth: the tears on the podium are not always from genuine worship, but often from unaddressed brokenness. Many women put on a facade of joy because church culture leaves no room for their pain. Mica suffered from bipolar disorder, yet instead of receiving compassion, proper boundaries, and clinical support, her mental health was weaponized against her.

"The manipulation was systemic. The day after Mica died, JP stood before his congregation, cast himself as the grieving victim, and suggested Mica’s tragic death was a consequence of disobedience. Unquestioning loyalty allowed a leader to twist Scripture without accountability."
I have not attended a local church since the pandemic, as I continue to process how frequently religious institutions fail women. I haven't walked away from God—only from institutional structures that enable harm. If the church wants to heal families, it must start by cultivating discipline, humility, and accountability in its men.

Today, the physical building of Solid Rock Church has shuttered and been sold, yet JP Miller continues to pastor a tiny remaining congregation of roughly 15 to 20 people in pop-up locations around Myrtle Beach. Alongside him leading worship is his new wife, Suzie Skinner—a woman with whom he allegedly had an affair while both were still married.

My heart goes out to Mica's family, her first husband, JP's first wife Alison, and all the children caught in this storm. Had the church stepped in to protect them early on, Mica might still be here today.  As for JP’s present wife, she has married her retribution

May Mica’s soul rest in peace, and may this story force the church to confront its failures and stand up for the vulnerable.
