Justin Trudeau, Katy Perry, and the Reality of Staying Separated But Not Divorced

The Unspoken Truth of Mid-Life Splits: Why Separation Becomes a Holding Pattern

Most divorces happen for men and women between their thirties and late forties. It usually occurs after a woman has given birth, raised her children, and settled into the rhythm of being a wife and mother. But during those years of supporting a partner's goals, it is incredibly easy for you to lose your individual identity without even realizing it.

While divorce isn't a competition, the aftermath often feels entirely unbalanced. Visually and socially, men frequently seem to emerge as the "winners." It is not uncommon to see men remarry before the ink on the divorce papers is even dry—often marrying women ten years their junior who do not have children.

Furthermore, the physical toll of building a family falls disproportionately on women. While a man's body often remains intact, a normal woman's body permanently changes after childbirth. Your body may now bear stretch marks, loose skin, drooping breasts, weight gain, and larger proportions in areas like the hips, bust line, and feet. Society then labels you as "middle-aged" or "older."

Combine these physical changes with the reality that the children usually live with the mother, and the dating landscape changes drastically. These dynamics make it significantly harder for women to jump back into dating, let alone find a new spouse.

The Celebrity Blueprint: Separation vs. Divorce

This lifestyle has become an accepted, visible pattern. We see it constantly with celebrities and people of influence. A striking example of this dynamic is the high-profile relationship between former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and American singer-songwriter Katy Perry.

Trudeau, 54, and Perry, 41, have both walked down the aisle before. While Perry is divorced, Trudeau is actually only separated. He and Sophie Grégoire Trudeau officially announced their separation on August 2, 2023, after 18 years of marriage, simply citing that they had grown apart.

When a TMZ video leaked in July 2025 revealing that Justin and Katy were dating, many were happy to see him moving on. However, recent headlines dropped a bombshell: Justin and Sophie are still legally married. Despite separating nearly three years ago, neither has actually filed for divorce.

In the book When The Marriage Ends, there is an entire chapter dedicated to codependency and the painful process of letting go. While the public can only speculate on why the Trudeaus remain legally wed, it raises serious questions. Now that Justin is flaunting his new relationship—even drawing media attention for acting overly affectionate on the Tribeca Film Festival red carpet with Perry—you have to wonder if this public display will finally push the legal divorce forward. If it doesn't, what does that mean for Katy Perry’s future?

It isn't about judgment; it’s about understanding the psychology. How do people remain legally married years after a formal separation? Is it because one person is entirely unwilling to move on? Is it a matter of complex legal logistics, or is it simply out of convenience?

Are You Moving On, or Just Floating? The Separation vs. Codependency Checklist

Remaining separated without finalizing a divorce can sometimes be a practical, short-term logistical choice. However, when months turn into years, that safety net can easily transform into a form of emotional gridlock.

If you are currently separated but hesitant to take the final legal step, use this checklist to determine if you are genuinely protecting your assets, or if you are holding on due to codependency.

The "Logistical Reality" Checklist

If these are your primary drivers, your delay is likely based on strategy, not emotional stuckness:

  • [ ] Active Financial Structuring: You are actively working with legal and financial professionals to split complex assets, pensions, or business holdings.
  • [ ] Explicit, Time-Bound Agreements: You and your ex have a clear, written separation agreement with a specific, agreed-upon date for filing the final divorce decree.
  • [ ] Health & Legal Benefits: You are intentionally maintaining a legal status solely for un-splittable health insurance or specific immigration timelines, with both parties fully aware and consenting.

The "Codependent & Holding On" Checklist

If you check two or more of these boxes, the prolonged separation may be serving as an emotional crutch preventing you from truly healing:

  • [ ] The "What-If" Safety Net: You keep the marriage legally alive because a small part of you believes they might change, or that you might eventually get back together.
  • [ ] Managing Their Feelings: You are holding off on filing because you don't want to upset your ex, trigger their anger, or face their emotional reaction.
  • [ ] Identity Suspension: You feel terrified of who you are without the title of "wife" or "partner," preferring the ambiguous middle-ground of separation to the finality of being single.
  • [ ] The Invisible Boundary: You use your "married but separated" status as a shield to avoid getting genuinely close to new romantic partners, keeping one foot firmly in the past.
  • [ ] Avoidance of Final Grief: Legally finalizing the divorce means admitting the dream is truly dead. You stay separated to avoid experiencing the final, deep wave of grief.
  • [ ] Continued Monitoring: You still feel responsible for your ex's well-being, lifestyle choices, or emotional states, keeping tabs on them as if you are still partners.
Separation can be a necessary pit stop on the road to healing, but it is never meant to be a permanent residence. True freedom requires the courage to sign the papers, close the book, and start writing your next chapter.
